The teaching of design and technology across Bredon Hill Academy is delivered through a variety of creative and practical activities that cover designing, making, evaluating and technical knowledge, following the National Curriculum Programme of Study. Pupils are encouraged to develop their creativity and produce design products with a purpose in mind and for an intended user.
Through our curriculum, pupils:
- will use creativity to design and make products that solve real problems within different contexts.
- develop research and planning skills.

Curriculum Overview
Year 7
Content | Skills |
Basic Core Design Skills | Develop basic core design skills and design communication skills including sketching, drawing controlled lines, 3D sketching and annotation; develop knowledge of key terminology.

Timbers and their Properties | Introduction to the workshop and H&S procedures; select from, and use, specialist tools, techniques, processes, equipment, and machinery; investigate different joining techniques and how to finish wood; develop knowledge of different timbers and their properties. |
Mechanisms, Forces and Motion | Investigate and understand how mechanical systems, such as levers, linkages, cams and gears enable changes in movement and force. |
Electronics | Understand what the terms voltage, current and resistance mean; how to create series and parallel circuits using a breadboard with light, sound and movement as inputs and outputs.

Workshop Safety | Retrieval of H&S procedures within the workshop; select from and use specialist tools, techniques, processes, equipment and machinery. |
Design in the Natural World | To gain an understanding of biomimicry and biomorphic design and how it is used to inspire design ideas and avoid stereotypical designs; to gain an understanding of sustainability and the 6Rs; understand the responsibilities of designers and engineers and how they are accountable for the products they design and make. Analyse products from the past, present, and future; investigate new and emerging technologies and their impact on individuals, society, and the environment. |
Metals and their Properties | Research different cultures’ traditional artwork to inspire designs for making a product out of metal; investigate ways to shape, form and decorate metals; develop knowledge of metals, their properties and of the annealing processes. |
Sketching for Making
| Designing through sketching and 3D modelling. Know how to create and use mood boards to inspire designs; understand the meaning of ‘anthropometrics’ and ‘ergonomics’ and why they are so important for designers; use specifications to design products that are innovative, functional and appealing. Use annotated 3D sketches and detailed plans to communicate ideas; create a functional and appealing prototype from timber; test, evaluate and refine ideas and prototype against the specification and user needs. |
Modern Materials | To gain an understanding of a wide range of modern materials and to learn about how materials can react to outside stimuli and investigate how these materials can be applied to product design. |
